The president of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh met on December, 22nd the representative of the United Nations secretary general under human rights and internally displaced persons, professor Walter Kaelin.

As IА REGNUM correspondent in Sukhumi reported, during their meeting problems of the Georgian-Abkhazian peace process (in particular, the situation in Gali area) were discussed. Professor Kaelina wondered about the position of Abkhazian management concerning opening in Gali area an office of the United Nations under human rights, placing of the component of the civil police as well as questions, concerned the forthcoming process of distribution of internal Abkhazian passports.

Bagapsh confirmed again his readiness to adopt coordinated document on the international guarantees of not renewal of military actions. Thus, the head of Abkhazia emphasized that if official Tbilisi made amendments to the project of the document unacceptable for Abkhazian party, the process of its passing would be tightened on the fault of Georgia. Analyzing the situation in Gali area, Bagapsh noted that intensity of the criminal conditions was obvious.

In that connection Abkhazian government planned to undertake in the nearest future a number of measures on strengthening public order in Gali area. Thus the head of the state paid attention to absence of restrictions on the national attribute for the local residents during their employment to the law enforcement bodies of the area.

Talking about possible opening in Gali area the United Nations office under human rights the president reminded that such office had been already working for a long time in Sukhumi and, on Bagapsh’s belief, it was quite capable to carry out monitoring being located just 70 kilometers away from Sukhumi Gali area. The president of Abkhazia also expressed a doubt that the component of the international civil police consisting of 7-8 people would be capable to affect the situation seriously.
