8 Azov-Black Sea public organizations of Russia signed on October, 2 reference "No to ports’ construction in Imeretinskaya lowland!" It was sent to the UN Environment Program, the International Olympic Committee, to the state bodies of Russia, as well as to the address of the company "Base Element", building ports.

Their construction, in the opinion of representatives of the ecological community, would cause destruction of the unique natural systems of Imeretinskaya lowland. The organizations called to undertake effective measures for creation in the territory of the lowland of a natural reserve.

The ports were planned to get situated: one - in the area of the mouth of Psou river, another - in the mouth of Mzymta river - were called to supply construction of the objects of the Olympic game of 2014 with building materials. Together with the other objects of the Olympiad they should occupy about a half of the territory of the lowland.

The action of the ecologists was dated for the International day of the Black sea, commemorated on November 1.

"Imeretinskaya lowland, - it was spoken in the reference, - is … a unique place in Russia, where they saved water-marsh угодья of the Kolhidian type. Here there are situated critically important areas of many rare kinds of plants and animals". The lowland is unique from the point of view of protection of birds; in that connection it has the key status of the ornithological territory of the international importance.

The ecologists remind that more than once they had informed the Russian state bodies about ecological threats, which could be caused by the construction in Imeretinskaya lowland of the Olympic objects and the accompanying infrastructure.

"One of such official letters was sent a year ago on behalf of the Ecological Watch in Northern Caucasus and the Sochi branch of Russian geographical society, - it was spoken further in the text. - As a result of consideration of this reference at the end of 2006 as indemnification of the damage, which will be caused to the natural systems of the lowland as a result of construction of the Olympic park, the state bodies of Krasnodar Region offered to create in Imeretinskaya lowland a natural ornithological reserve".

The public agreed to that compromise way of solving of the problems. "Creation of the natural reserve in the area not less than 1000 hectares, which structure would include all the saved sites of the water-marsh lands and seaside ecological systems, with constant administration and service of environment protection could substantially compensate these losses", - the ecologists remarked.

However any real measures on creation of the natural reserve had not been undertaken so far, the ecologists notified. "Moreover, they announced about the plans of construction of the cargo ports, which make impossible creation of this park, as the ports and their coastal structures would occupy the most valuable sites of the lowland, which could become the zones of the centre of the future natural reserve", - the authors of the reference stated.

In end the ecologists called the Russian authorities, as well as the company "Base Element" to refuse construction of the cargo ports in Imeretinskaya lowland and to undertake effective measures on creation of the natural reserve in its territory. In its turn, the UN Environment Program and the International Olympic Committee were called to help the process directed on preservation of the unique natural systems of Imeretinskaya lowland.

The reference was signed by the coordinator of the Ecological Watch in Northern Caucasus Andrey Rudomaha, the chairman of the ecological section of natural landscapes protection of the Sochi geographical society Alla Yusupova, the co-chairman of the Krasnodar regional branch of the All-Russian public organization "Civil United Green Alternative" (CUGA) Dmitry Kaptsov, the chief of the initiative group "Clean town " (Tuapse) Elizaveta Torgovkina, the chairman of the Coordination council of the Krasnodar regional public organization "Utrish" ( Anapa town) Stanislav Ermolaev, the co-chairman of Temriuk regional public organization "For Taman’s Rescue! " (Taman settlement) Igor Golubenkov, the president of the public organization "Sailing Academy " ( Taganrog town) Vladimir Nazarenko, the co-chairman of the public organization "Committee of National Control" (Taganrog town) Alexey Tsivenko.

As Nickolai Eskin head of Adygeya branch of Caucasian bio-spherical reserve commented the statement, besides the balneological value of Imeretinskaya lowland there is also its ornithological indispensability. In that area, especially in winter, when in Taman the snow drops, many kinds of migrating birds stop.

About creation of the natural reserve in that territory it was spoken in the Soviet time, he said. As far as he knows, the arrangement concerned it was achieved in absolutely recent time. However he did not know any details of it. In the whole the requirement of the ecologists was not unreasoned, Nickolai Eskin considered.

As it had been earlier informed, within the framework of preparation for realization in Sochi city of the Olympic games of 2014 in the territory of Imeretinskaya lowland in area of the mouth of Psou river construction of the cargo port with planned cargo 7-10 million tons a year was planned. The port together with the accompanying infrastructure was planned to be constructed on the most saved site of the water-marsh lands of the lowland.

There, according to the ecologists, should be a centre of the natural reserve, which the authorities were ready to create as indemnification for destruction of the sites of the nature of the lowland. And the plans of its construction actually crossed out the opportunity of creation of that reserve.

The initiative of construction of the second port - in the area of the mouth of Mzymta river proceeded from the company "Base Element". It was planned that the cargo of the port would reach 3-5 million tons a year. For comparison it was more than the cargo of such known ports as Temriuk (1,5 million tons in 2006) or Yesk (about 3 million tons).

To supply transportation of cargoes through those ports they also planned to construct a big railway station in Veseloye village - with cargo about 5,5-7 million tons. It would occupy a significant area. It was supposed that there it should be necessary to construct 15-16 railways.

While the authorities assure that the ports would be temporary - constructed only for the period of preparation to the Olympic games, the ecologists remarked. But there are no guarantees. The port business is one of the most profitable; hardly the owners of new ports in Imeretinskaya lowland, after they are constructed, will agree to dismantle them.

Thus, they considered, Imeretinskaya bay should become the third cargo port of Krasnodar Region after Novorossisk and Tuapse ones. The ports in Russia are not clean, they speak, and consequently, there would be clean not only the lowland, but also the sea in that area - the beaches between the two ports.
