Moscow has given a Georgian airline permission to fly to Russia for the first time since the two ex-Soviet nations fought a war in August last year, Russia's transport ministry said on Monday.

Moscow has given Georgian Airways permission for charter flights on December 29 and 30, ministry spokesman Timur Khikmatov told Reuters by phone.

"Permission has been given for flights between Moscow and Tbilisi and between St Petersburg and Tbilisi on December 29 and 30," he said. "They will be the first flights since the war."

No agreement has yet been reached for the resumption of regular flights, he said. There have been no passenger flights between Russia and Georgia since the war.
