The first President of Abkhazia Vladislav Ardzinba will be buried with all the honors he is supposed to receive, the head of the state Sergey Bagapsh heading the state commission for organization of V. Ardzinba’s funeral told journalists.

V. G. Ardzinba died on Thursday, March 4, in Moscow.

“Vladislav Grigorievich Ardzinba is a great personality. His services to the people of Abkhazia are invaluable”, Bagapsh said.

The place of Vladislav Ardzinba’s burying will be agreed with his family. “It will correspond to this great person’s services”, S. Bagapsh added.

The first President of Abkhazia Vladislav Ardzinba died Thursday morning at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow. His widow told Interfax that the other day Vladislav Ardzinba was delivered by an EMERCOD special flight from Sukhum to Moscow in severe condition.

Vladislav Grigorievich Ardzinba was born on May 14, 1945 in the village of Lower Eshera of the Sukhum district. He spent his childhood and school years in the native village. In 1966 he graduated from the historical faculty of the Sukhum State Teacher Training College and entered the post-graduate courses of Oriental Sciences Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

V. Ardzinba worked for the Institute from 1969 to 1988, studied history, culture and religion of ancient peoples of Asia Minor. In 1985 he defended the thesis for a Doctor's degree, and in 1987 was appointed head of the department of ideology and culture of Ancient Near East of Oriental Sciences Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

V. Ardzinba is the author of more than 40 scientific works.

In 1988 V. Ardzinba was elected Director of the D. Gulia’s Abkhaz Scientific Research Institute of Language, Literature and History. In 1989 V. Ardzinba was elected deputy of the USSR Supreme Soviet. The same year V. Ardzinba was elected chairman of the subcommittee on state and legal status of autonomous republics and became a member of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet.

In 1990 V. Ardzinba was elected deputy of the Supreme Soviet of Abkhazia and Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Abkhazia.

Having headed the republic, V. Ardzinba started to follow the line aimed at exercising the indefeasible right of the Abkhaz people to self-determination. When a Georgian aggression against Abkhazia began in August, 1992 V. Ardzinba became Chairman of the State Defense Committee and headed national-liberation struggle of the Abkhaz nation. Headed by him on September 30, 1993 the people of Abkhazia won a victory in this severe war.

On November 26, 1994 V. Ardzinba was elected the first President of the Republic of Abkhazia. He headed the country till 2005.

V. Ardzinba is a Doctor of History, professor, full member of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia, Adyghe International Academy of Sciences.

V. G. Ardzinba was awarded with the supreme state award of the Republic of Abkhazia - the first degree Order Akhdz-Apsha, the Hero of Abkhazia medal and the South Ossetian supreme state Order of Honor
