The “Forum of National Unity of Abkhazia” Republican Party “condemns the murder of the head of the district branch of the Religious Board of Moslems of Abkhazia, a former deputy of the Parliament, a member of the Public Chamber of Abkhazia Emik Chakmach-ogly”.

“Abkhazia has never been a place for confrontation of the world religions – Orthodoxy and Islam, following the path of this or that faith is a matter of everyone’s conscience”, the Forum’s statement released today reads. “We also condemn any attempts, whoever they come from, to settle any contradictions, not keeping within the law”.

The latest events are already becoming a tendency arousing anxiety in the society, the document emphasizes.

According to the opposition party, “absence of proper struggle against crimes from the part of the authorities gives grounds to the enemies of our nation and our state to try to destabilize the situation in our country and to strike blows to traditional basics of our society - unity, brotherhood, religious patience, and mutual respect”.

The Forum of National Unity appeals to the society, all religious, political, and public organizations and associations “to be united in front of threats and challenges to all of us”. “And we also believe that our common values – Independence and Freedom of our state – the Republic of Abkhazia that each of us is responsible for, is what we are obliged to preserve and increase”, the FNUA declares.

A representative of the Religious Board of Moslems of the Republic of Abkhazia Emik Chakmach-ogly, born in 1961, was killed on July 17.

The press-service for the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Abkhazia told Apsnypress, E. Chakmach-ogly had been shot outside his own house in the centre of Gagra on Nartaa Avenue. Chakmach-ogly was coming back from his own shop located near the house. He was shot, when he, having parked at the house, got out of the car.

The Religious Board of Moslems of the Republic of Abkhazia links Chakmach-ogly’s murder with his religious activity, and rule out the domestic crime case.

Earlier, on July 10 in Sukhum an attempt on the imam of the Sukhum mosque Stanislav (Salikh) Kvaratshelia had been made.

“In our country there has never been religious strife, either hidden, or open hostility and prosecutions on the basis of confessional belonging”, the People’s Party of Abkhazia declared. “In our country all religious confessions have always got on peacefully, Abkhazs has never had religious intolerance”.

According to the People’s Party, prosecution of representatives of Muslim faith “is extremely inadmissible, since a sinister line to separate, alienate our people is discernible here”.

The People’s Party of Abkhazia demands from the law enforcement bodies to investigate “numerous recurrent acts of vandalism and terror in respect of representatives of the Muslim community of Abkhazia that are coming to normal”.
